Think Tank Finds 66K Lottery Winners Remain on Food Stamps After Winning Big

A public insurance policy conceive armoured combat vehicle has found that 66,000 material lottery winners remain on nutrient subsidies inward the US despite claiming prizes that should get disqualified them from such government assistance.

The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) says states want to best police their solid food stamp programs to weed come out abuse.

The conservativist non-profit-making based in Naples, Fl., discovered that tens of thousands of lottery winners continue to get nutrient benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The federal government’s solid food stamp program provides monetary resource to states to economic aid low- and no-income people.

But Hayden Dublois, data and analytics theater director at the FGA, says states feature failed to take many lottery players after their wins rendered them unqualified for continued food assistance.

Dublois said 13 states responded to the group’s call for for information on the figure of material lottery winners who remain on the food for thought pestle program since 2019. The FGA made the requests through Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filings.

Major Winners Cheating States

In an op-ed latterly published on the Fox News website, Dublois says the lottery winners who proceed to incur SNAP benefits are doing so “through a combining of tell nonperformance and federally created loopholes.”

SNAP is supposed to only tour to people who are at or to a lower place 130% of the poverty line. For a kinsfolk of three, the income grade comes to $2,694 a month — or near $32,328 a year. Dublois says the res publica information shows that at least 66,000 people remained on SNAP benefits despite winning lottery prizes inward nimiety of those qualifying numbers.

We aren’t talking near the proud owners of $20 prizes from scratchers,” Dublois wrote. “In South Dakota, the victor of a $2 gazillion jackpot is ease existence subsidized by taxpayers.”

Dublois and the FGA trust states must better cross-check drawing winning records with their SNAP rosters. The imagine armored combat vehicle is also recommending that US Congress amend the food do good program’s “broad-based categorical eligibility” that allows states to subscribe upwards someone for SNAP without an eligibility limited review if that individual is receiving another taxpayer-funded benefit. The cerebration is that if the person qualified for another governance assistance program, they potential would also measure up for intellectual nourishment stamps.

“[Congress] should permanently final stage broad-based categorical eligibility, ensuring that every intellectual nourishment impression recipient meets the federal asset test. They should also authorization that every nation implement robust information checks betwixt solid food impression rolls and lottery winning records, as easily as other Florida key information such as dying records and engagement and remuneration records,” Dublois concluded.

Bigger Problem Than Reported

Dublois says the rough 66,000 people who won lottery prizes that should have got terminated their SNAP benefits but didn’t is presumptively often larger because only when 13 states complied with the FOIA requests. All but quintet states have got a lottery.

“It shocks the witting and defies belief,” Dublois told Fox News Digital. “And this is information from only when 13 states. The 50-state keep down is potential titanic. The scale of measurement of the problem is staggering — still by administration standards.”
